Archived
This is the term that is used for stored digital video that can readily be reviewed in playback mode.
Archive
Player
This is a built-in player in the BSC software, which allows the viewer to review the archived video using playback controls.
Analog
Video
This is the older format of surveillance video that is used in CCTV (closed circuit TV). With the analog format, the video is viewed, and
stored, in terms of lines of resolution (LOR). Like analog televisions this video format is fast becoming obsolete.
Bandwidth
A term used for a high speed Internet connection. Bandwidth is referred to as download or up-load. Up-load is often referred to as out-going bandwidth.
BSC Software
This is the abbreviated version of the byRemote Surveillance Center video management and recording software. The BSC software is available in the form of licensing, for which the pricing is based on the video storage solution.
Compression
In order for video to be transferred over the Internet it must be compressed. The different compression standards are Motion JPEG, MPEG and now H.264. The BSC software currently supports Motion JPEG as this format better supports the recording of the video images as well as live streaming video. byRemote will review any new video compression standards, including H.264, for possible implementation in future releases of the BSC software.
Cable/DSL
Router
This is the device that permits multiple devices on the network to communicate with the Internet.
Digital
Video
This is the newer format of surveillance video. The video is viewed, and archived, in terms of the pixels of dots per inch (DPI).
Digital
Device
In video surveillance this refers to the IP cameras and video servers, which are used to create the digital video.
DSL
Digital Subscriber Line. This is one version of high-speed Internet.
File Sizes
IP video is referred to in file sizes of Kilobyte (Kb) which is 1024 bytes, Megabyte (MB) which is 1,048,576 bytes, Gigabyte (GB) which is roughly a billion bytes or 1,000 MB’s and Terabytes (TB) which is 1,000 GB’s.
FPS
Frames Per Second. Digital video is viewed in terms of FPS with most IP cameras producing a maximum of 30 FPS. When viewing the video over the Internet, the speed will be 1-3 FPS. When viewing the video over the LAN, the speed can be up to 30 FPS.
H.264
This is a new video compression standard that boosts the capacity for high-resolution video by minimizing storage and bandwidth needs. H.264-supported IP devices and BSC software support will be available in Quarter 4 of 2008. As this compression standard reduces the digital video files sizes by 50% over Motion JPEG, it will greatly reduce bandwidth and storage requirements. This will allow higher resolution images to be transported efficiently over the Internet.
IP Address
Internet Protocol. In order for digital video to be viewed over the LAN or the Internet, an IP address must be assigned to the device. This IP address is the conduit by which devices on a network communicate with each other and the Internet.
ISP
Internet Service Provider. The provider of the bandwidth needed to connect devices to the Internet. Often this is your phone or cable company. There are also wireless and satellite service providers.
LAN
Local Area Network. Usually a single location with a number of devices connected through a hub via Ethernet cabling.
Look-Back
This term refers to the time period of archived video that is available for review.
Motion
Detection
Most IP cameras and video encoders support motion detection and, in turn, so will the BSC software, as it supports IP cameras and encoders. Motion detection is supported by the creation of an event where an instance is recorded based on object size, sensitivity and time. Should there be an instance of motion that was triggered by these settings; a notification will be sent via E-mail or as a text message. If the instance is sent via E-mail still video images can be included.
MSRP
Manufacturer Suggested Retail Pricing. Each BSC license or service has an MSRP, which is used to calculate the commission available to the partners while they are at the authorized reseller level. Some partners do use the MSRP as their retail price but it is not required. Each partner is free to charge a fee which they feel is appropriate for their particular circumstances.
Partner
This term refers to the Authorized Partner. byRemote does not sell direct to the end-user in areas where there is a partner. Instead, a national network of channel re-sellers are authorized by byRemote to re-sell the BSC software and services, which they purchase from byRemote at wholesale rates. We call these Authorized Partners. There are two levels of partners; Reseller and Video Data Center
(VDC).
Playback
When video is archived it is then available for review in playback mode. This means that, by using the built-in archive player in the BSC, the viewer can playback the video using the controls.
Recording on
Motion
This is a feature that allows video to be stored only when 1) motion is detected and 2) an object is detected. The setting of the sensitivity of the pixel movement will determine when the video is recorded based on motion and the setting of the object size will determine if the video is recorded based on the object detection. Since it is the settings of the pixel movement and the object size that determines if the video will be recorded, great care is necessary to make sure that the settings are correct to allow the video to be recorded when the video is needed. As a default, the BSC software records video on a 24/7 basis to ensure that the recorded video will be present when needed.
Remote
Viewing
This is the ability to view the live and archived video from a remote browser that is connected to the Internet. The BSC software does not require that PCI board or client-side software be installed on the viewing PC.
Reseller
This refers to the Authorized Reseller Level of the byRemote Authorized Partner Program. At this level, byRemote is hosting the video for the partner’s customers on the byRemote Video Data Center (VDC). Based on volume the partner receives a monthly commission amount based on a percentage of the MSRP. The partner is billed for the Net Amount, which is the MSRP less the commission amount. For more information on the byRemote Authorized Partner Program please click on the Partner Program button.
Resolution
This refers to how digital video is viewed and archived. The BSC software uses two resolutions. The first is the standard resolution of 320X240 pixels with a file size of approximately 16 Kb per image. The second is the high resolution of 640X480 pixels with a file size of pproximately 46 Kb. The new resolution is megapixel, which is up to 1280X1024 pixels. The new H.264 compression standard will allow for the video storage and transport of video in higher resolutions.
Rolling
Hours
The BSC software is designed to archive video in terms of hours. This means that the viewer always has a set number of look-back hours of video to review. For instance, if the archiving period is set for 3-Days, the viewer would always have 72 rolling hours of video to review on a look-back basis.
SaaS
Software as a Service. byRemote, Inc. was a pioneer in offering their BSC software in the SaaS model.
SEL
Software Enhancement License. Like most software, the BSC is being updated, upgraded and patched continually to maintain its integrity. This is referred to as an SEL. In addition, major features are being added regularly. byRemote has affordable plans for the SEL to ensure that the partners always have the latest version of the BSC software.
Transfer
Rates
This is the rate, usually in Kilobytes or Megabytes, that video is transferred over an IP connection using the Internet.
VaaS
Video as a Service. byRemote, Inc. offers live and archived (stored) surveillance video for an affordable monthly fee. We call this surveillance video product platform Video as a Service, or VaaS. Hosted Video as a Service, or HVaaS, is our off-site product where the video is archived on Remote Servers. Managed Video as a Service, or MVaaS, is our on-premise product where the video is archived on a video storage server at the customer’s location.
VDC
This refers to the Video Data Center level of the Authorized Partner Program level where the BSC software is installed on, and surveillance video is stored on, the partner’s video storage server. Just as byRemote provides a VDC for the partner’s customers at the Reseller Level, the partner provides a VDC for their customers. For more information on the byRemote Authorized Partner Program please click on the Partner Program button.
WAN
Wide Area Network. Multiple locations that are connected via the Internet, wireless or fiber connections.
